Ok folks, sorry for all the posts on this, but I found a work-around.  
If your having trouble getting something off an ftp server, but you  
can get it manually, here's what you can do. If you grabbed the file  
from the ftp site, place it in /opt/local/var/db/distfiles/ 
packagename, then run port install packagename it seems to work. Now  
can't say if it'll get all the dependencies, but assume so. Running  
port with the debug switch gave me some info. The problem is either  
you need to put this out to a file or run and break the program cause  
VO doesn't deal with all those messages flying across the screen.
