speakable items: had to change my listening key

I thought that the escape key wouldn't be affected if I didn't hold  
it down. However, when I went to use emacs I found that I was unable  
to use the escape key in sequences where I am using that instead of  
the alt key. so I changed my listening key. Was this necessary or am  
I misunderstanding something?
