yes, but my impression is that what is needed is for what is being spoken to be highlighted.

I think she just finds the caption panel confusing. One of the difficulties she/we had in general was figuring out how to select an area for VO to read. The metaphor of highlighting text with a cursor by holding down the mouse didn't seem to apply.
