Yes, you can get rid of the mp3s, But are your sure you want to? You can play mp3s in RealPlayer, but you can't play aac files that way. If you have an mp3 cd player, you can burn an mp3 cd and play the cd that way. WIth aac files you could burn a data disc and play back the tracks in iTunes, but not in other music players.
Main reason to think about this is whether you want to commit to using iTunes in its current less than accessible format. And some folks will claim that using LAME to rip CDs as mp3 files can give you as good or better quality sound, although aac gives you better sound for the same size file. Your call on this, I think.
