Well, I don't use VO keys and j, I just stay out of the message
table and interact with each message if I need to when I open it. If
I go to the text then use VO keys and a it reads just from the
message text. Works really well.
Thanks to everyone's suggestions,
Jess

Another thing you can do is set a key to read selected text; if I
recall correctly it's not part of vo per se but the option is found
in system preferences in speech in the text to speech tab. Just
don't set a key or combination of keys you need for something else.
If this is set, instead of jumping to the text with vokeys-j you
just hit your selected text key from within the messages table and
it reads the whole message. The only thing you may not like about
this is that it reads the headers and not just the body.
