To finish my thoughts on the usb sound card, interestingly, neither  
best buy or Compusa here carries them though compusa says they used  
to do so. Don't have any idea why. I'm hesitant to buy something  
online that I've had no chance to explore firsthand; they do cost  
more than an imic.
