I think column mode is the outline mode because I can expand and
collapse it.

Vo has a *real* problem with column mode when you're in one of
those file selection boxes where you're trying to find a file for
an application to open. In that context, outline mode is the only
thing that works. Kind of anoying, but it works, and since I've
figured that out, I've had no problems with finder saying busy,
not busy, busy, not busy. Much better.
