I have heard that textedit can't do word counts. I tried it in microsoft word, and while it was reading the left side of the diologue "pages, words, paragraphs etc" I couldn't get it to read the numbers which were over to the right of the box. Perhaps it might be possible to read those with the mouse? Can you read text by moving the mouse curser over it?
