Scott and all,
I've broken out the read iris part of your message into a separate
thread both for the sake of this discussion and because it's good
info for anyone looking in the archives for read iris stuff since we
can only find info by subject there.
To ad my two bits, I ordered from the site I think or maybe picked it
up from apple but didn't find that site impossible to deal with using
my Mac but they may have changed it in the months since I looked at
it. I've got an hp usb 6250 here and they told me they could upgrade
my scanner with one that would work on the mac for 100 dollars but it
is probably one where the interface would come up so this is
valuabble info. I'll go ahead and order the 5590 or whatever because
the money is not of greater concern for me than the anoyance or
possibility of anoyance.
Thanks!

on Read Iris, I had a chat with them regarding the issue of the
scanner driver interface coming up, they said that is a function of
the scanner manufacturer's software and there's nothing that can be
done, but the scanner does have to be twain complient. I spoke to
Epson and they informed me that this is how all the scanners behave.
I then spoke to HP and was told that only scanners like the 5590 and
higher-end stuff behaves by not bringing up an interface and that
scanner is $299. Not sure I want to spend $299 on a scanner at this
point so guess I'll have to live with it. Also the Iris site when you
order the pkg is a real drag to work with and I was forced to use ie
on the windows platform. Hey they US rep agreed the site sucked at
least. I did get it for $59 instead of $129 so I do not know if this
was some special or anyone who tries it gets the special deal, but
that deal came to me in an e-mail.
