VLC is opening the movies now but I still get the processor fan
activity and no audio when I open hem.

As for changing back, remember the warning in the readme file for
rcdefaultapp? It might be hard to change them back; at one point
when I had to change something back, I had to first change back
what I wanted to change and that still didn't work so I had to
temporarily remove the pane and reboot. Anyway, if you want you can
wait till I send the list to try reversing anything.
Sorry this is turning out to be a pain.
