copying multiple files

Ok chawk this up to old age, but I'm missing an important step in  
selecting multiple files I wish to copy. Would someone mind running  
over the steps? I know its got something to do with disabling cursor  
tracking after your on the first file you wish to copy and then I  
can't recall what you do to highlight the next and subsequent files.
