This advisory is only an advisory. It does not speak of a real
virus, only a proof of concept. It's *not* a virus, because you must
remember a virus (by definition) must be able to spread itself.
Using this method, code could be executed on your machine that
*could* replicate itself, though this sample does not. It's kind of
silly for apple to simply rely on extensions to say which program to
launch anyhow. I've used this method myself a time or two to get
something loaded into a program I wanted. Apple really should check
the file header to verify it is the type of file it claims to be
before loading it into the app in question. Nothing major, but it is
a slight oversight.

Hi Jane,
Anything is possible in this world. I only know that the only
viruses
I have heard of and worms have come from using Microsoft Office on

no surprise. If this is real, I'd hope that Apple posts something
on their
website to, at least, acknowledge its validity.

Hi John:
I get security alerts directly from secunia.com. If this is a false
alert, PLEASE let me know. I pay for the Virus Barrier program and
email
notices I receive.
I see nothing official from apple site, as yet. I also checked
their
discussion forums. Nothing yet. Hope I haven't sent you all on a
wild goose
chase.
With a smile,
Jane K.
