It sounds like the page selection gets rubbed out. I don't know where that is to change. It's also a guess, but I wonder if somehow the number of copies is being put into the page range box.

You have control over the modifier keys (except shift, but including Caps Lock):
System Preference. > Keyboard and Mouse > Keyboard (tab) > Modifier
Keys. (button)
