Hooray! Good news. Funny, I was just writing to you in a second email
that that is one heck of a coincidence that it happened on both
machines. Hm. Anyway, trashing the cache is always the first thing to
try when encountering any problems with help. For books, David
Pogue's Mac OS X the Missing Manual Tiger Edition is a good one to
start with. Bookshare.org has at least some of the O'Reilly reference
books - which includes the Missing Manual series.

That worked beautifully and I hadn't thought of that as a problem,
but will for the future. Really got to get my hands on a good
Darwin and Mac book that covers loads of stuff in detail that I'm
interested in.

1. Quit Help Viewer, if it's not already quit.
2. From the Finder's Go menu, choose Home.

5. Look for the "com.apple.helpui" folder.
6. Rename that little folder to something else, such as "old Help
cache folder".
7. Open Help Viewer. Does the issue return?
