Apple very recently filled a new position for an Accessibility
Software Engineer. The job was posted publicly on the web so some of
us got a look at what Apple wants in this kind of employee...and, by
extension, what Apple is trying to do in terms of accessibility.

Do you *really* want to change the world? Apple's VoiceOver
Engineering Team is seeking a software engineer who will become a
point person for how best to implement the accessibility API's within
end user applications. This engineer will be an expert in how to add
accessibility to both Cocoa and Carbon applications and will consult
with teams inside Apple, providing guidance, source code, and
examples. This person will also assume primary responsibility for the
shipping accessibility developer tools, maintaining existing code and
creating new tools when necessary.
The ideal candidate will have experience writing shipping software
for OS X or other Unix systems. This person will be passionate about
accessibility, and will adapt well to different programming
environments (such as Carbon, Cocoa, and Java). Since much of this
position is about knowledge transfer, the ideal candidate will be a
top notch communicator and team player.
Key Requirements:
* Ability to write quality code and ship quality products.
* Ability to manage several concurrent projects.
* Strong coder with experience in C, Objective-C, or C++, preferably
on Mac OS X or Unix, but Windows is acceptable.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Strong design and analytical skills.
* Track record of innovation and excellence on previous assignments.
Additional Desired Skills and Experience:
* Strong Cocoa or Carbon development skills (with desire and ability
to learn the other).
* Experience with adding accessibility to end user applications.
* Experience with OS X Accessibility API's.
* Experience with accessibility software products.
BS in Computer Science or equivalent.
