Actually, I just switched to outline and, with a lot of busy signals, was able to open a .cnf file in textedit; the "open" was undimmed. However, I also noticed something else. when I first changed radio buttons, it refused to chnge; with vokeys I saw a browser area that wouldn't open but when I tabbed I saw outline. I had to turn vo off and back on to get the change. So, I'm thinking that the dimmed open might actually be vo's fault, that vo somehow isn't showing the change. I can't test this theory because now that I got one .cnf file to open in text edit, they all do; it's possible that there was an "always open" box that was checked. But people might want to experiment with this. I've seen other dialog instances where a change was made and vo did not show it without being turned on and off. I wish now that I'd tried this by turning vo on aff and on after interacting with browser instead of changing radio buttons but it's too late for that--sorry!!!
