Thanks, I might try the unpack tool again to be sure at least the
directory issue isn't my own doing, operator error.
I'll see if anyone has anything to say about number 2.

2. Finder had no trouble with the smil files I have but they may be
different in some way from the ones you downloaded from bookshare;
somebody else may have better info on that.
