vlc buffering question

Hi all

I'm having a bit of an issue with vlc regarding buffering. I have my  
music and videos on a samba server on my network that is being hosted  
by a Linux PC. Whenever I try to play a music file or video file from  
the network, there are intermittent skips, usually about every ten  
seconds or so. I'm looking in preferences but can't find where to  
change the buffering. Can this be changed or is something else going on?
