Hi,
You are right. However, if those DAISY Players/Recorders that do
allow you to connect to the computer, they are all windows based.
Because the new Plextalk PTR2 allows for access to the memory card to
download MP3 materials or DAISY materials to the unit, this can only
be done in windows and not on the Mac. Also the PRS software for
creating DAISY books on the computer only works in windows.
Another example is this. The reason that I have not purchased
BookPort is because at this time, it only works on a windows machine.
Sorry for drifting from the main topic.

Well, except Vickie specifically mentioned CD - portable media.
There are multiple options for folks that want to play a DAISY 2
book on CD (from any content provider) in a portable device. No
computer required. There are RFBD members (both individual and
institutional) who use the portable players only and don't own a
computer. RFBD distributes the Plextor players, among others. A
number of the portable DAISY players have no means of connecting to
a computer at all (the new, all-in-one Telex Professor player is
one such example). We have almost all of the currently available
DAISY players here in-house (don't have Book Port though) as we are
developing/producing training materials for them.

correct, even the book port requires windows. Being stand alone
does no good if you can't get content into them and manipulate
it. I believe book port is working on a Mac solutioApr 9, 2006,

Hi,
But as I understand it, these players all use only Windows
software. In fact I directly asked the makers of Plextalk if
they would make an application for the Mac and they emphatically
said absolutly not!

$120 is a lot in view of the costs of RFBD or Book share that

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. That's too much to play for a
DAISY player. katieplayer is less than $20 and we agree only
to arrangements where we can ensure the price will stay where
it is (this is harder than you might think).
PS would love to have a way to take daisy books and load onto a
CD/ DVD and play/read them in a portable way. Vickie Weir
There are a good number of portable DAISY players available
from various manufacturers: Plextor, HumanWare, Telex.
