Regardless of what the instructions say, most muds/moos/mushes do not need to be installed in the root directory. I hosted mud servers for several years and never ran across one that couldn't be installed in the users home directory. Of course, sometimes they required modification of supporting files for path names, but generally even this wasn't necessary. Drop me a message with what moo it is, and I'll go check for you.
But, in general, just to answer your original question.
To get to the root of your drive, simply type
cd /
that's a slash
in the terminal window, and you'll be in the root. I strongly recomend against installing anything off the root of the disk. Create a new user, and install whatever moo it is under the new user's home directory. Keeps things much cleaner.

Can someone help? I am trying to install a moo to play with on my Linux machine. It's suposed to be placed in the root directory, which I guess is what I have, but not sure how to get it there, or for that matter how to get the other file I need copied there. How do I do this?
