I used to see this a lot in pine when receiving mail from european
addresses. You should check your keyboard/country preferences, and
see what character map you're using. This could have a lot to do
with what you're seeing. How you do this is an exercise left up to
the reader, only because I've not done this under OSX, and so can't
describe how to do it.
