Press the space bar to open them. In the case of Word attachments, I recommend saving them, and then opening them with edittext. This will allow you to read them.

John,

If you interact with your text while the compose window is up, you
will see an indication of your attachment.  Also, remember to
activate the choose file buttone once you have highlighted the file
you wish to attach or the dialog will bail with no results.
