Quicktime can play mp3 streams just fine.  I've used RcDefault to  
change all my defaults to use quicktime instead of itunes for  
everything except for the audible audio, since their plugin is for  
itunes.  It would be nice if they'd make one for quicktime, then i  
could eliminate Itunes entirely, but for the moment, that's all I use  
it for.
Quicktime is an excellent program, and between quicktime, real audio,  
and vlc there really isn't any need for most other players, as those  
three can handle almost anything.
