You can hook up to a TV via either S-Video or Composite.

Yes, as Bill wrote, look for "Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter" on the
Apple Store for $19.

The Mac works well for a media center, but it does not have a tuner,
nor video input (besides firewire). I think your friend will need
something like eyeTV:
