I often get this effect on my mini if I have too many apps open, and  
mail is bogged down.  It seems the fix is to close one or two windows  
(or entire apps if you don't have multiple windows open) and the  
problem goes away.  My guess is that since the speech is generated  
via software, and it's on the fly, memory/cpu limits it's quality.   
It's slightly anoying, but nothing that'll stop the show.  Perhaps it  
should be reported to apple, maybe they could add some additional  
checks to the speech generation algorithms to try to prevent this.
