Hi Kevin,
The only way I know of to do "first letter" navigation is to use the
"Item Chooser" menu when in the Dock. Simply press VO keys+i when in the
dock to bring up the menu then press either the first letter or first
couple letters if you wish to be more specific and then press Return
which will take you directly to that item. You will still need to press
space to activate the item.
