Actually, since I'm a bit late on replying to this, someone probably  
already said, but...
You can simply do a double click on the splitter, and that will get  
rid of the scroll area too.  It must be a vo-shift-space click, not  
just a vo-space click.  This will remove the preview area, and that  
annoying habbit of marking things read when you didn't read them will  
go away.
