Subject: Re: hooking up a pc moniter to the beige g3?
Hank.
My g3 came with a pci card already in it. Either my case is one of the
later runs, or it's been modified, since I do not have a monitor built-in
to my case. If I did not put a video card into my G3, I would have no
video.
On the one I have, there's network, usb, firewire, microphone, speaker,
and a small round plug I'm assuming is either for the old style apple
keyboard, or a ps/2 mouse port. That's all besides the paralel port. I
have nothing that could be construed as a video port except for what's on
the video vcard (which isn't currently in the case) Perhaps Karen could
go over the ports again, and say which is which, but I'm fairly certain
the G3 macs did not have proprietary video ports, and thus no adapter
should be necessary. Look in the back, near the bottom (on the right
side) there should be 4 slots there. One of those probably has a video
card in it. If not, then it's possible you don't have a video card in
your machine which could contribute to your confusion.
Most of the older macs (I'm talking pre os9 days) had a much longer video
port type connector on them. For these, it was necessary to have an
adapter if you didn't have a mac monitor to go with them. I have this
adapter, as well as some of that variety of mac monitors, but they do not
work (or fit) on the G3 because it has a standard vga video port on it.
But again, perhaps I have one that's much newer than yours, so content
could vary. I'm by no means an expert on mac hardware.
