Yes, you could use rules for this kind of thing, and for some things
I do indeed use rules. I.E. anything coming into softcon.com
addressed to my books account automatically gets moved to the books
folder, but sometimes I don't know I want stuff grouped, until I get
a few messages of that kind, or from that sender, or with that
subject line. Then, it's simple enough to setup a smart mailbox, and
move them where I want them. I could also do the same thing just
using the search box in mail, and sometimes I do. It all depends on
how much work I'm willing to put in for the messages.
I like the fact that smart milboxes leave messages in the same place,
but only gives the appearance of having them separate. But,
sometimes this isn't the behavior I want, so I move them. Other
times, it's exactly what I want, so I use a smart mailbox.
It's simply another way of doing the same thing as using the search
box, or if planned in advance, rules can do nearly the same thing,
but they're (slightly) different, so each is useful in it's place.
