I will try the copy and paste again.
What the automater will do. Bring up context menu when you are in
folder then arrow down to the automater actions and pick names in
folder. What the outcome is a file on your desk top called folder names.

Yes, that is old school. OS 9 and before actually has better facility
with printing directory listings.

What happened? I tried it with TextEdit just to double check my
memory before posting that. If you use TextEdit, you have to Format >
Make Plain Text first.
I am working on a automater word flow.
Nothing wrong with learning to use Automator, but that is a lot of
hard work for something that should just be a few keystrokes.
