Just a short note. Today, we finally released Infovox iVox and
VisioVoice, which were designed for use by people with vision
impairments.
Infovox iVox provides high quality voices in several languages that
can be used with VoiceOver.
VisioVoice, which includes a license for Infovox iVox, provides
several speech related features for VoiceOver users and adds things
like a talking interface and text and image zoom windows for people
who have vision impairments, but can (and prefer) to navigate with
the mouse rather than with VoiceOver. VisioVoice is our first product
in this field so I would not yet claim it to be perfect, but I am
sure it will already be helpful to people with varying degrees of
vision impairments. Feedback is always welcome, just write to me
direct.
Both products were tested for a couple of months by a number of
Macvisionaries to make sure the voices worked well with VoiceOver and
that VisioVoice would cooperate as well as currently technically
possible with VoiceOver (there are still some issues, documented in
the manual, because of various Mac OS X bugs that I hope will be
mostly addressed in Leopard). These beta testers did an awesome job
and it is largely thanks to them that the products have achieved this
degree of compatibility with VoiceOver.
