questions about long avi or mp3 files?

Hi all,

I have some long avi and mp3 files I want to play.  I'm looking for a way to 
be able to stop such  files, and later pick up where I left off.  So, I 
either need a way to set and then return to bookmarks, or an accessible way 
to  determine and then jump back to a specific time within a file.

Also, what do I need to do in order to play avi files?  When I attempt to 
open one, quicktime comes up, but it appears as though I need a plugin 
before it'll work?
