Cheryl, if your loosing all sounds from the Mini, try deleting /
Library/preferences/com.apple.audio.Devicesettings.plist. Restart and
see if this works. If so, you may want to make a back of this file
to replace the other if the problem happens again.
The plist will be regenerated once you reboot or login, depending
upon the file in question. I'm not an expert here, but it has helped
me in the past to delete certain plists when VO has been acting up.

this is one of the few things about the mac mini that drives me

has a tendency to keep telling you to look at the screen.
