Cheryl,
Have you tried mechanically switching the audio from one USB port to the other port? I've seen something similar to your problem on my laptop.
Also, I assume you've tried rebooting your mini.

If I could get the installation dvd to work I'd bite the bullet and reinstall but as I've mentioned before, it won't boot or won't talk or both. but it boots on my other computer and other cds/dvds boot on that machine.

Is there any kind of a command-line mixer settings program for the Mac, like aumix and recmix and alsamixer for linux/ I have a feeling that something must be muted or turned off.
