Hi Richie,
RG: periodically, it will ask me to enter a password, to unlock the
"Change Lock" utility.
TK: I'm not sure what the "Change Lock Utility" is that you are
speaking of. If you are referring to the Keychain then that is
normal and there is no way of turning it off. OS X also asks for an
Administrator password when programs are installed or updates made
that will affect the OS. this is a safety mechanism and would leave
the OS vulnerable if turned off therefore it can't be. In other
words, you'll need to figure out that password.
RG: Unfortunately I don't recall ever typing a password. Does Tiger
do this often, when a new computer has just been purchased, even
though one didn't type a password? And if so, how do I get rid of
this message?
TK: This has nothing to do with your computer being new. During the
Set-Up Assistant, you were asked to enter a password. I'm not sure
if you can leave it empty but if you did, that is not desirable at
all. If you are still unable to remember your password, it can be
reset by starting your computer with the Install DVD. Once it stops
spinning and you are able to turn on VO, go to the menu by pressing
VO keys+m. I can't recall for sure which menu it's under, but you
will find an item worded something about resetting your password.
RG: I haven't been able to Force Quit the Installer icon. As a
result, I can't get into the VoiceOver Utility, using the VO+F8 command.
TK: Which installer are you speaking of?
Later...
