Cheryl,

Enable root user inn the security menu of netinfo manager in utilities folder. I think you can do this from the command line if you are sys admin as well but forget how. This gives you root which you can use for both su and sudo. Makke sure you unlock netinfo manager first. Also, then you need to set a password for root.
so enable root and set a password.
