Hi Fred,
I find the most reliable method for switching the default for a given
file type is to do the following:
1. Locate a file of the type you wish to work with. In your case,
mp3 or m4a.
2. Once the file has VO focus, press cmd+i to "Get Info".
3. Navigate to the "Open With" item, if it is not expanded, press VO
keys+space to expand it. (VO keys means ctrl+option)
4. Navigate right and then choose the application you wish the given
file type to use as default from the pop-up menu.
5. Navigate right to read the item that says something about using
this application for all files of this type and then navigate right
again to the "Change All" button.
6. Press the "Change All" button with VO keys+space and confirm your
request.
That should do it and it tends to be more permanent than using the
contextual menu option.
