In addition to the brightness and contrast sliders in the Displays system profs, here are brightness keys on the keyboard, on the top row, second and third from the left. Try working with these next time you have sighted assistance available.

In answer to Scott's questions, this is an out of the box refurbished Mac Book I bought from Apple.
