If you have mp3 files elsewhere on your disk and want to add them to your iTunes library you can use the keyboard shortcut of command-o to import, and then navigate in the finder-like window that appears to select the location of the files you are importing. Once imported, mp3 files should show up in your music library, and can be found with the "Search Text" field or with the browser (described in my preceding post).
