I'm going to have a look at all of these editors which people have suggested. Smultron I've had a brief glance at, and it looks promising. It still means I need to hand-code everything. But at least I can see the code, and not just the links which TextEdit displays. Honestly, what were Apple thinking of when they designed that! Surely, the whole point of an editor is to ... edit things! Thanks Greg and all for these suggestions.

Admittedly, it's shareware, but it *is* an alternative, if for some reason you're not happy with Smultron.

It's also got an interesting ability to let multiple people edit a document at once.
