Subject: Fusion Beta 3 ... It's Awesome!
Hi all. Okay, I've finally got around to playing with this, been busy
all morning. This application is now utterly awesome! All of the
sluggishness in beta 2 due to the debug options has now gone, even with
debug enabled. It pains me to say it, having bought the product. But it
now seems to me that there's no need for Parallels Desktop. I honestly
cannot see any advantage in having it now. With beta 2, Parallels blue
Fusion out of the water. With the release of Fusion beta 3, the opposite
is now true. It remains to be seen how much Fusion will sell for when
it's finally released as an official product. Hopefully it won't be in
the hundreds of Dollars range. Given VMWare's past history though, I
wouldn't be at all surprised if it is. If memory seres, when I bought
VMWare Workstation a few years back, it cost me $299 so I would expect
about the same to be true for Fusion. As popposed to Parallels $79.95.
So, we'll see. But for now, I am so impressed, I have removed my Boot
Camp partition totally, and won't be using Parallels any more for a
while. Installing Windows under Fusion is an absolute breeze. Just give
it your user ID, Password (optional), and product key - and away you go.
Let it do its stuff until you come to the log-in screen. Just hit Enter
at this point and up pops Windows. Then, install the VMWare tools to
enable your display driver and off you jolly well go. I set Fusion to
use 2 virtual processors, and oodles of memory. My one criticism is that
it's still not possible to resize your virtual partition once configured
under Fusion, whereas it is under Parallels. I'm just wondering actually
whether you can use a physical hard disk instead of a virtual one. I
think I'd prefer to do it that way. Anyway, so far so good.
