Hi AC,
My own web sites went up (with the exception of sightunseenpictures.com)
before I lost my sight several years ago. Now, I have somebody do my basic
work, as I have screwed up enough back end stuff to have realized,
accessible or not, fixing the little errors is just as time consuming as
fixing the big ones, so now I avoid it altogether. :)
Since I only freelance now, getting everybody in the office to make
concessions for irregular work isn't really an option, but if I can get
Quark files FTP'd to my home office, I've come up with the simple work
around of proofing the text elements in the layout after having removed the
graphical elements. I wouldn't be touching the graphical elements anyway, it
would save the mag company loads of time by sending over only the 'empty'
layouts since they are largely pictorials, and we'd both be happy.
I have to finish the edit of my film over the next two, maybe three
weekends, but I am planning on downloading teh trial version of Quark, then
returning here to ask about scripts that might smooth the speed bumps I
encounter, and see if it's worth pursuing. Thanks for the suggestions,
though, I do plan on trying them all out. My first computer was a Mac (back
in 91, a Mac Classic II), and I have used Mac pretty regularly ever since,
but for my home and personal writing I have always been a PC user, so my
main freelance writing needs have always been fulfilled by WORD and (until
recently) PageMaker. Now that we have a pretty powerful Mac for the film
editing, it'll be nice to be able to offer freelance clients services for
both. I have been toying with VO, and I find it pretty straightforward, so
the learning curve hasn't been too bad. Of course, needing to use Quark to
really ramp up my freelancing would mean laying out the dough for a copy,
whereas writing only required WORD, but hey, if this is what it takes and I
can be productive in it, it'll pay off eventually.
Again, thanks to everybody for the input and suggestions, they have been of
much help.
Joe
Best,
Joe Monks

Can anybody tell me if Quark works with VoiceOver?
Wow Joe, that is some web site! But since you are the boss, why not
dictate tools that are VoiceOver compatible? I know Quark and Adobe
are the 800 pound gorrillas in publishing, but it seems to me that
PDF/X lets you consider other alternative work flows. I am guessing
you have a real Mac guru (or two) on staff full time, so I would think
if the major pieces are all Cocoa, Automator and AppleScript could
fill in all the seems. One company that has been particularly
promising has a screen writing app that might be up your alley:

Theirs is really nickle and dime compared to the market space you are
in, but they make the big players look ignorant in terms of
accessibility. It is alot of work to find them, but I suspect there
are modern applications that do what you need. Most people are stuck
trying to adapt to the inaccessible applications used by everyone else
in the office. You have the advantage of being in a possition to tell
everyone ELSE to work a little different!
