OK here is a program that should start to take care of your problem.
xls2web will take an Excel spreadsheet and convert it to a html file.
Text formating is retained. Sheets are shown as separate h1
headings. start the program and do a command-o to open your excel
file. It will prompt you to save the html file and then open that
file in Safari ready to read with VoiceOver.
The program is, of course Voiceover compatible and will in the future
do a whole bunch of other things like make text, csv, xml and Daisy
files out of excel files as well. But this should help with the
problem at hand.
The program is free you get it by mounting my iDisk public folder. To
do this choose "Other users public folder" from the iDisk menu of the
Finder's Go menu. When prompted for the username enter gregkearney
that's all one word. In a moment you will have a new disk on your
desktop name d gregkearney-Public inside this disk is the program
xls2web copy it to your local drive.
