system dialogues

hi all

all of a sudden, my macbook has started bringing up system dialogue.  
but for osme reason i cant get to it with a window chooser menu. what  
do i ahve to do, is my mac becoming dammaged?
i have done nothing other than watch a dvd on here this morning with  
softcon DVD.
also, as i say this happens everys o often when i just listening to  
files  etcetera
