I don't use fire, but I may have an answer for your sorting problem.
If your contact list is in an outline view, then try hitting VO | and
see if that fixes it. VO \ expands and collapses levels in an
outline, and VO | switches the sort order. I accidentally typed that
command once, and it took me a while to work out what I had done.
