Thanks for the reply. The files are my own mp3s that I have either recorded or taken from my CDs.

I think it depends on how the file is split up. For example if you are listening to a book from Audible.co.uk and it has a number of chapters, you can skip in smaller increments by using command shift and left or right arrow respectively.

You might also want to try VLC player,  Quicktime, or Cog
