safari and ftp question

Does safari come equipped to open up ftp sites and download files from 
them?  Reason I ask is I was trying to download a version of nethack for 
the mac from versiontracker.com and was told the server couldn't be 
accessed.  It could be I don't have safari configured correctly to do this 
and I'll have to get the stuffit archiver down to open this when it does 
download.
