I don't know whether listers were aware of this or not but typing on the keyboard when in the Desktop or other finder folder helps you get to items quickly, on my desktop I have aliases for Text Edit and Transmit, typing "TR" gets me to the Transmit alias which I can then execute by pressing command-o, I'm hoping that Apple Scripts will allow me to tie many of these aliases to shortcut key combinations for example command-ctrl-x for text edit etc.

You can arrange the items on the doc using option right or left arrow. Just go to the doc andput the focus on the item you want to move.

Yep, that's what I found but I let it ride just in case other listers know something I don't <smile>.

Hi,

I use the desktop also. The trouble with the doc is that you can't access an app quickly in it, you have to tab around and that's not good enough is it?

Each to their own of course, I cannot see any advantage in using the Doc when I want to get to things or launch things quickly, when I boot my machine then the Desktop is the first thing that I see by default so to me at least, it makes sense to have aliases to the folders or applications I most frequently use there.

Hi Dane and all,

Wow. That's very interesting. I love the doc and use it for launching all my common tasks like Mail, Safari, TextEdit, Parallels, and so on. I can't imagine not using it.

My desktop just has aliases to my most used tasks including Mail, Safari etc and I admit to hardly ever using the doc, it was much the same when I used Windows, I used the Desktop but never the start menu much, I think of the Doc in Tiger as much the same as the Start menu on Windows XP.
