An update shouldn't crash Safari. But in any case you can check your version by going to the Safari menu and selecting About Safari.

Have you tried:

1. Repairing Permissions with Disk Utility

2. Reset Safari command from the Safari menu

3. Open Keychain Access in the Utilities Folder, open the Keychain menu, select Keychain First Aid, then select Repair. Rerun a few times if you get errors. If the errors don't disappear, go to your Library folder, and find the Keychains folder. Select "login keychain". Press Apple Key + D to make a duplicate copy. Then, move the original to the trash (don't empty). Rerun Keychain First Aid and see if it can complete without errors. This last suggestion is a long shot based on the following thread:
