Hi Richard,

Late reply, but I just wanted to point out that I don't ever remember
Apple giving out free copies of OS X like that. The OS up-to-date
program was always a heavily-discounted price for a copy of the new OS
for computers purchased a certain amount of time before the OS release
date (I think with both Panther and Tiger it was two weeks before the
official release date). If I remember correctly as well, the price
was in the area of $10-20, throw in a couple dollars for shipping.
For computers purchased at the retail Apple stores on or after the
date that still had the old OSs installed on them, I think they gave
out a free copy of the OS...or charged you that very minimal price for
the newer OS.

Apple also does this with other software, most recently iLife 2008 at
$10 for computers that came with 2006, purchased on or after a certain
date.

cheers,
jane
